Manager/Consultant of Health Strategies - Ontario
Being named the Manager of Health Strategies - Ontario in 1995 was a very exciting and challenging chapter in my career. The position had never before existed and I was a part of a small team who's mandate was to create and establish the Health Strategies department for this world ranked pharmaceutical company. Partnerships were developed with private sector stakeholders (the largest employers in the province) in an effort to understand, then manage workplace health thus minimizing absenteeism due to illness. Our role was unconventional and as a result of our teams' success we established ‘best practices’ tools and strategies still used in the marketplace today. Accomplished during my 5-year assignment:
-Partnership collaboration with these employers lead to landmark best practices. We were able to connect, through
research, workplace health and increased workplace productivity
-Launched a software program that helped analyze workplace health issues
-Delivered employee education programs for private/public sector Human Resource Managers of large employers, Inspire
- Established unconventional, unprecedented partnerships between a pharmaceutical company and influential Canadian employers: Nortel, City of Mississauga, Canadian Tire Acceptance, Metro Toronto Police, Brock University, Xerox, Dofasco, Dana Canada, Lincoln County Board of Educations

The premise of GSK's Strategic Health Management initiative that was delivered from my department to targeted large employers throughout Ontario was that a healthy workforce has a competitive advantage; a healthy workforce = a “healthy” business. Healthy workplaces didn't just 'happen' they required commitment to a long-term strategic plan. We were able to analyze an employers' employee drug data usage with our Health Evidence Computer Model. Aggregate prescription data analysis could approximate the most prevalent illnesses in a given workplace. Once those illness categories were identified we helped the employers improve wellness through a number of initiatives, one being employee education. The Inspire education modules were created. I helped plan, write, design then taught the Inspire series of health education workshops to employee and community groups throughout Ontario (four modules):
1. Take Control of Your Health
2. Migraine
3. Smoking Cessation
4. Asthma Management
The Health Evidence Computer Model and the Inspire education series brought international recognition to our department throughout Glaxo Smith Kline world. Each Inspire module included a 20 minute presentation, a patient information booklet and workbook and tools for the Human Resource professional or Occupational Health Nurse to use for follow-up with employees who requested it.
